Short Note Temporal Variations in Crustal Scattering Structure near Parkfield, California, Using Receiver Functions

چکیده
We investigate temporal variations in teleseismic receiver functions using 11 yr of data at station PKD near Parkfield, California, by stacking power spectral density (PSD) functions within 12-month windows. We find that PSD levels for both radial and transverse components drop by ∼5 dB following the 2003 San Simeon (M 6.5) earthquake, with a persistent reduction in background levels of ∼2 dB, relative to the pre-2003 levels, after the 2004 Parkfield (M 6) earthquake, corresponding to an estimated decrease in shear-wave velocity of ∼0:12 and ∼0:06 km=sec, respectively, or equivalent negative changes in Poisson’s ratio of ∼0:02 and ∼0:01. Our results suggest that the perturbation originates at middle to lower crustal levels, possibly caused by the redistribution of crustal pore fluids, consistent with increased and sustained tremor activity near Parkfield following both earthquakes. This study shows that we can resolve temporal variations in crustal scattering structure near a major seismogenic fault using the receiver function method.

33 Seismic Imaging of the San Andreas Fault in Northern California using Receiver Functions
Scattering of teleseismic body waves is conventionally used to investigate crustal and mantle structure using the so-called “receiver function” technique. This approach makes use of the fact that teleseismic events have nearvertical incidence upon horizontally layered structure, ensuring minimum phase, and assumes that source-time functions can be approximated by energy on the P component of mo...
متن کاملA Strong Ground Motion Catalogue of Selected Records for Shallow Crustal, Near Field Earthquakes in Iran
Understanding strong ground motions in the near-fault areas is important for seismic risk assessment in densely populated areas. In the past, lack of information on strong ground motion for large and moderate earthquakes led to the use of mainly far field large and moderate earthquake records in equations for calculation of the strong ground motion parameters. In this article, we collected and ...

متن کاملShort Note Phase-Weighted Stacking Applied to Low-Frequency Earthquakes
We apply phase-weighted stacking (PWS) to the analysis of lowfrequency earthquakes (LFEs) in the Parkfield, California, region and central Cascadia. The technique uses the coherence of the instantaneous phase among the stacked signals to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the stack. We find that for picking LFE arrivals for the Parkfield, California, region and for LFE template formatio...
متن کاملAnalysis and Modeling of the Wavefield Generated by Explosions at the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth
Surface array and deep borehole recordings of chemical explosions in the near-source (0-20 km) region are studied to better understand the radiated wavefield, and in particular the generation of S-waves by explosions. More than 120 explosions have been conducted in the immediate vicinity of the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) between 2002 and 2006 as part of a comprehensive progr...
